NBA and Players Association donate to Haiti relief efforts

NEW YORK -- The National Basketball Association and National Basketball Players Association announced today that, in response to the recent tragedy in Haiti, they will contribute $1 million to support the relief efforts. The NBA and the Players Association will join forces with longtime community partner UNICEF and other relief agencies to provide emergency assistance to the estimated three million victims.

Philadelphia 76ers center and Haiti native Samuel Dalembert, who is also a players union representative, taped an NBA Cares public service announcement for UNICEF encouraging fans to contribute to the relief efforts. Prior to tonight's Philadelphia home game, Dalembert will address the crowd and ask for fans' assistance in supporting the relief efforts. UNICEF will have volunteers throughout the Wachovia Center to collect donations from fans. UNICEF President and Chief Executive Officer Caryl Stern will be in attendance to accept a $100,000 donation from Dalembert, who will also match donations made by fans this evening.
