Sore hamstring sidelines Lakers' Gasol; Artest, Odom return

LOS ANGELES -- The Lakers came in Tuesday against the Rockets shorthanded and with a few question marks.

Lakers forward Pau Gasol, who strained his left hamstring in the first quarter in L.A.'s win against Dallas on Sunday, did not play.

"There actually is an insignificant amount of tear, but it's still something that we want to prevent from being anything greater and so does he," said Lakers coach Phil Jackson pregame, who mentioned that this strain was less severe than Gasol's right hamstring strain that caused him to miss the first 11 games of the season.

Though there is no timetable, "we're hoping this is more day-to-day," Jackson added. "I highly doubt that he will be ready for [Wednesday's game against the Clippers]."

Lakers forward Ron Artest, who missed the last five games with a concussion, started in his first action. Artest fell down a flight of stairs outside of his home Christmas night and suffered a laceration to the back of head and his left elbow.

As for Lamar Odom, who missed Monday's practice because of intestinal flu-like symptoms, started.

"We're going to see how Lamar does," Jackson said. "He has a lot of issues. He's dehydrated. We're going to have to watch him closely."
