"[It's] just to have another look," Kuester said. "Right now we're going through this stretch that maybe mixing it up might help us."
Maxiell hasn't started the past four games, including Tuesday's 98-93 loss at Dallas when he did not play at all. He also played limited minutes -- six minutes against Chicago and four at Toronto -- twice during the recent stretch.
Detroit (11-22) has lost 10 straight. That's the most since 1993-94 when the Pistons lost 13 in a row.
Maxiell has started 13 games this season. That last start was Dec. 23 in a 30-point home loss to the Raptors.
Still, Kuester cited no problems with Maxiell.
"Jason is somebody who has been a true professional through this entire process," Kuester said.
Maxiell replaced rookie Jonas Jerebko, who played 14 minutes and went 1-for-5 for two points and two rebounds at Dallas.
"Jonas is going to be an outstanding basketball player in this league," Kuester said. "Now we get another guy [Maxiell] with some fresh legs and ready to go."
